I thought I would be seeing them on my own but then I found a mate’s cousin and uncle were going and then my mate himself and then finally another mate’s wife. All of us had obtained our tickets from 2nd hand sources from either ebay or free from people who couldn’t go.
We were all positioned in different places around the arena but all got similar view as it was ‘in the round’.
The stage was a rectangle bang in the middle of the arena with the drumkit in the middle and 8 microphones placed around the perimeter.
In the darkness a flurry of lasers started things off as the 4 ran onto the stage to start 2 hours of classic metal.
The new album is pretty good and they played a good lump of it, 6 songs in fact in pairs with the older stuff slotted between.
The rest of the material was mainly from their first 5 albums with nothing from the recent ones that didn’t receive very favorable reviews.
Every so often there were some stage effects adding to the show that included huge eruptions of fire from various places on the stage. Later on the lighting rigs would lower and pivot to show them as huge coffins. Very impressive design.
Best songs for me were One, Sad But True, Master Of Puppets, Nothing Else Matters, Enter Sandman, Seek & Destroy which ended the night.
I went home with buzzing ears but I think the guys near the front in the 4 mosh pits will be going home with happy bruises, some of them even more from what I saw in the slam dancing circle.
Ahh good ol’ metal :)
