Elijah Wood is #9 and does a good enough confused brave living rag doll in a post apocalyptic alternative Earth voice. But it’s Christopher Plummer as #1 and Martin Landau as #2 who I preferred to hear more. John C. Reilly has a fair part too while some of the others come and go without much presence. But it’s the animation that is the main star here. Money and possibly ideas from Tim Burton and Night/DayWatch’s Timur Bekmambetov have helped Shane Acker produce a very nice looking animated film full of action and dread. The ending slightly let it down for me as while it’s all very imaginative the final part just didn’t seem to fit into it right for me.
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Heath Ledger is Tony and does a good enough memory lost pawn in a game final role. But it’s Christopher Plummer as Dr. Parnassus who I preferred to see more. I also think that Lily Cole and Verne Troyer were good in their roles. I didn’t really know the other main actors but liked the way the guy playing Mr. Nick had a devilish feeling about him.
Due to Heath’s death to complete the film Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell took on Heath’s role inside the Imaginarium. I need my own Imaginarium to know what Terry Gilliams original plans would have looked like but for some reason this new casting seems right. They aren’t in it for very long though but they do get all the fun bits.
For me it was a little slow in places and with less special effects than I thought it might have, but it was also quite charming and did keep me captivated enough.
