The Manfreds

It’s been 6 years since I last saw The Manfreds. I think the line up has remained the same with original members Tom McGuinness on guitar, Mike Hugg on keyboards (although he was originally the drummer), Paul Jones on vocals/harmonica and Paul’s replacement Mike d'Abo on vocals and keyboards. They were joined by a bassist, saxophonist and a drummer who I think used to be in Family.

This tour is a special one as celebrates 50 years since the bands creation. The songs played mostly alternated between those sang by Paul (5-4-3-2-1, Sha-La-La, The One In The Middle, Pretty Flamingo, Do Wah Diddy Diddy, Smokestack Lightning ) & Mike (Fox On The Run, My Name Is Jack, Ha! Ha! Said the Clown, Mighty Quinn).
Mike also performed a couple of songs he had a hand in writing, those being Build Me Up Buttercup and Handbags & Gladrags.
Tom added a couple of tracks from his McGuinness-Flint project to round up a nice gig that had stage time of over 2 hours.

There was cheeky banter and band stories between songs and during some tunes the old video footage of the band was projected onto the back wall. The guys performed well to the aging audience, some of the band themselves now being into their 70s themselves.
Most impressive thing of the night for me though was Paul’s harmonica playing showing why he was British blues awards harmonica player of the year 2 years running.
